Scenario: From Unemployed to Unstopable!
Rico grew up undocumented and watching his parents get paid a fraction of their value. Then, in his 30’s, he experienced a layoff and struggled to find work. He applied to several jobs, and he’d make it through to an interview or three, until it was between him and one other person, and then the job would go to someone else. Rico was starting to get really deflated and it was hurting his pride. He felt bad about himself that his partner was contributing the majority of the finances. But the thing that didn’t make sense was that he is a very likable guy, he’s good at what he does, and is passionate, so it was hard to imagine that an interviewer would sit across from him and not choose him.
As we explored Rico’s self-talk, what we started to realize is that, out of a value of authenticity, he would overshare flaws that would give interviewers hesitancy to hire him. We honored that he wanted to be authentic, looked at what interviewers need in order to trust their hire, and reframed that he could demonstrate how he has worked with his challenges in effective ways.
When Rico came back after that session, not only had he found one job; he found three that all utilize his talents and strengths in ways that keep him engaged. He just needed to uncover the subtle way he was sabotaging his own success. Through our work together, we uncovered what was really holding him back — a fear that if he were all of his big self, he would risk being shamed or found out— a fear that started as an undocumented child afraid of being deported. He was afraid that being more successful than his parents would somehow be disrespectful to their struggle. But what he realized is that owning his ADHD and bigness is his superpower! By doubling down on all his passions, he unleashed a vibrancy that serves his personal and professional life in synergistic ways.
